Leroy Sané dribbling Trent Alexander-Arnold

Leroy Sané is known as huge talent. In the 2017/18 season, he scored ten goals in the Premier League and was crowned best newcomer of the season. In the 2018/19 season, he again scored ten goals and could establish himself at one of the best clubs in the world. In the summer of 2019, Bayern Munich wanted to buy him, but a torn ACL prevented the transfer. Nonetheless, Bayern should focus on getting Leroy Sané in the summer 2020 and adding him to their squad.

Bayern Munich Top Players

Since more than ten years, Bayern Munich play a system that heavily relies on wingers. Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben dominated Bundesliga and also played an important role internationally. After Robben’s retirement and Ribéry’s transfer to Fiorentina, the fans are looking for new stars. Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry are playing as winger currently, but both are not on the same level Ribéry and Robben used to be at.

Kingsley Coman showed great first signs and impressed with his incredible speed. But the Frenchman is too inconstant and injured too often. In five years at Bayern, he only did 100 games. He also missed the 2018 world cup due to an injury. In his time at Bayern, he managed to score 17 goals and played 18 assists, which is a rather average result.

Serge Gnabry on the other hand has made a huge step into becoming world class. The 24 year old winger has made 54 games in his two years at Bayern and scored 21 goals along with 18 assists. With these figures, he should have a safe spot even if Bayern signs Leroy Sané.

Why Bayern Munich?

For Bayern Munich, it is rather important to have a second good winger alongside Gnabry, someone who can score as many goals as him ideally. Leroy Sané has proven at Manchester City that he is capable of doing so. He did this in the best and most difficult league. Against strong opponents, he has able to pull off great games. Also, one must keep in mind that he had strong opponents in his own team. Thus, it is a success to get so much playing time in a team like Manchester City. The trust that Pep Guardiola is giving him proves how important Leroy Sané has become for his team.

Manchester City Banned From The Champions League

Manchester City has announced, that they will not sell Leroy Sané though. This was also the case last year, when Bayern Munich wanted to pay 100 Million Euros, but Manchester City refused to take this offer and decided to keep Leroy Sané in their team. Now the situation has changed though: Manchester City are banned from Champions League for two years. This means, that the team cannot participate in the Champions League for two years and thus will not get any income from this competition. Besides the sports, this will also be an issue financially. The transfer fee for Leroy Sané could decrease, if Manchester City need the money and are forced to sell players. Rumours indicate that Leroy Sané just wants to go to Munich and therefore Bayern only offer 40 Million Euro.

Also, it should not be neglected that it is unattractive for Leroy Sané not to play in the Champions League. The best players always want to compete against the very best and thus play in the Champions League. Besides, as German national player, he could be more in the focus of the media in a German team which means that he could also make more money through commercials. Surely, other teams will be interested in signing Leroy Sané as well, but seemingly Bayern are in the pole position. There are also rumours saying that Bayern Munich reserved the number 10 exclusively for Leroy Sané. This could also increase his commercial value.

Bayern Munich Summer Market Approach

How does this affect Bayern’s future plans? It is clear, that for Bayern, the focus is on signing Leroy Sané. They have the money to do that. Also, the record champion in Bundesliga are looking for a right back. Here they have cheaper alternatives. There could be a problem though with Philippe Coutinho, Ivan Perisic and Alvaro Odriozola, who are all on loan right now and could leave the club this summer. Under Niko Kovac, the squad was made smaller, but this could cause problems if the width is not enough to compete in all competitions. For a club like Bayern, it is essential to have enough good players in order to be able to rotate. There will surely be a need to tackle this issue.

This could also have an effect on Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz. The young playmaker played a mediocre first half of the season, but in the second half he was able to shine again. The executive of Leverkusen, Rudi Völler, has made clear that Kai Havertz will not be sold for a sum below 100 Million Euros. Bearing in mind that there is also the Corona-crisis, theses sums seem questionable. It seems as if Bayern will observe the situation and go for Kai Havertz in the summer of 2021. This year, there whole focus will be on Leroy Sané.

For the Bundesliga this transfer would also be great. Since a few years, the difference between the Bundesliga and the Premier League increases steadily. Many talents prefers the British island. A transfer the other way round would surely be interesting.

Manchester City have still good options to replace Leroy Sané, despite their Champions League ban and the Corona-crisis. The loss of Leroy Sané would be harsh, but with Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva, there are still viable options.

No matter what the upcoming summer will give us, it seems clear even now, that it will be spectacular off the pitch as well. For the Bundesliga as well as for Bayern Munich, the transfer of Leroy Sané would be a great deal. Currently, there are a lot of signs indicating that this move might happen soon. The executives of Bayern can be quite happy then.
